Vasoline on wheels?

Ok, this might sound strange but I was reading my owners manual closely the other day and under maintenence tips it recammended that petroleum(sp) jelly be applied to the rims every 3 mo or so to give them protection and a nice glossy shine I assume. Anyway, has anyone else heard of this? I can't remember what page it's on but it's in the manual.

You might as well glue the road grit directly to your rims! I remember reading this as well and thinking it to be strange advice...
