Get the newest model year you can afford. 2000 or newer if possible. I have a '99 and although I have not had problems with it (it has 71,800 miles on it now), you are better of going 2000 or newer. Better interior and probably less engine failures than before 2000, plus more horsepower. That said, even later year models have had some engine failures, so they are not totally immune either.

Is 97 a good choice? What are your reasons?

A fully loaded 97 might be an excellent choice for a collector as it was the first model year. First and last years tend to be more valuable to collectors - and the last year isn't made yet.

A basic 97 with a blown engine for real cheap could be an excellent basis for a track car(replacing engine with pre-2000 3.4L Carrera engine.)

A 2002 base model with 2 years warrantee might be a good 'cost per mile' balance for someone who drives 50,000+ a year.

A new factory ordered model let's you customize to your needs.

The newer cars offer higher levels of performance. The creature comforts (padded roof, sound systems, glass rear window, glove box, engine power) get a little better each year.

All Boxsters are good cars - but some will fit you better depending on your needs.
