Get the newest model year you can afford. 2000 or newer if possible. I have a '99 and although I have not had problems with it (it has 71,800 miles on it now), you are better of going 2000 or newer. Better interior and probably less engine failures than before 2000, plus more horsepower. That said, even later year models have had some engine failures, so they are not totally immune either.
