Repairing seat cushion, support, & carrier
 

I just did a project that took about two hours test drive included to replace my drivers side seat carrier, cushion, and hammock support. I had thought this would be a big job but not really. My reasoning for replacement was that I noticed some seat sag and the foam was starting to break away from the bolsters. The hammock support was still in tact but probably not long before it would fair. The carrier could have been reused but the wire bracket was broken so I figured what the heck.

Definitely notice improvement in support and seating position. I was sitting so flat that I was getting pain in my back and legs. I got my parts from Pelican but all in all it was not too expensive to repair the right way. If the leather was damaged I probably would not purchase one but gone aftermarket.

As you can see from the final product on the right, the bolsters are now firmer and sit taller. Seating is much improved.

On the left you see the pieces that were replaced. I know some people have rigged their own solutions but it really was not cost prohibitive to use the correct parts. Also my car is a 2002. The updated support mesh is black compared to the original orange. Also the seat foam was white with black top coating compared to the original yellow and white.

My seat is collapsed, but I kind of like the lower seating position. Nevertheless, I've been considering fixing it but I can't find the support that you mentioned. What was the part number you ordered on pelican?

Repairing with the new part looks great.

So the part numbers have changed from the diagram but pelican is good about cross referencing. Here are the part numbers and cost:

Carrier 996-521-505-02-OEM $82.25

So total price for me was $335 which is a bit steep but I had to replace the cushion as it had lost all integrity. I also strategically applied two $20 discounts and free shipping so my cost was $40 less. I think if you only have to replace the mesh support then it’s totally cost effective to do this repair before the cushion or the carrier lose their integrity. The carrier was fine except the wire loom bracket was broken. Since I had to strip the whole thing down I decided to replace whatever was broken. If the leather had failed then I probably would have used an aftermarket cover from lseats because the OEM leather is not worth it.

Thanks for that, I'll probably give it a shot soon. I think I probably only need the mesh. I actually have a spare passenger side oem seat covering which I used the top portion of to solve my bolster tear, so I'll probably modify the bottom portion to improve that too.

If your just replacing the mesh then it’s an easy repair with few to no tool requirements other than a simple pair of pliers to release the small tabs holding the seat cushion to the carrier. You probably know this but if you remove the seat cover as you propose you’ll need new hog rings. I used a pair of diagonal pliers to snip the hog rings attaching the seat cover to the foam. Reusing the hog rings really isn’t viable without risking damaging the rods that help attach and shape the seat cover.

I removed the seat cover by slowly separating it from back to front snipping the hog rings as I went. Installation is the reverse of removal. This allowed me to shape the seat cover back into position as I progressed. Once the cover was reattached, I was able to do the same procedure for reinserting the plastic tabs for holding the foam cushion to the carrier. In hindsight it might have been a good idea to film this.

Thanks for the heads up; I actually never got far enough into researching the process to know that. I'll give that technique a shot when I finally get around to it. At this point, I'm wondering if I need a new cushion too since I've been driving around on the old collapsed one for so long.
