I have not needed to take this metal plate on picture out when changing the exhaust from base to S and back.
Have you tried to leave the original plate in the transmission and connect the exhaust to that?

Won't connect. Pattern on exhaust bracket is made for matching transmission bracket.
Decided I'll leave off that plate and make a new spacer between exhaust & transmission
