Strange "Delamination" on HVAC Control Screen

Greetings!

This just appeared out of the blue on my HVAC control screen. Looks like some sort of delamination. I have no clue what could have caused it. Age I guess. It's just odd that it appeared seemingly overnight.

I've seen kits to replace the screen, rather than the whole unit, so would that be appropriate in this case? Is the screen part of the kit, or is it just replacement LED's behind it?

Any advice/suggestions on a remedy would be most appreciated.

Yes, the new screen will fix that and it is not hard to replace. I have bought some new at: https://914rubber.com/986-and-996-climate-control-lcd-screen-replacement-kit
It looks like the price has gone up since I bought them. They may be available and cheaper on eBay or elsewhere, but I like 914rubber.com for their support of the 914 community.

I'm sure there's some good DIYs online. Here's a disassembled picture that may show enough info without even seeing a DIY. Notes: the gray rubber strips are conductors from the circuit board to the LCD display. Some screws not pictured. Be sure to remove the protective film from the front and back of the replacement screen - carefully start at a corner with a blade and it should peel easily.

My replacement screen came from 914rubber too. The included instructions are excellent and following them makes the screen replacement a straight-forward project.

Just curious.... is it really a case of "de-lamination" or caused by other damage, like putting pressure from a finger on the screen or something other than just bad luck?

I'm crossing my fingers that my 25 yr old screen, still in perfect condition, remains so.

Not sure to be honest. The car has been garage kept and covered since new, and has less than 40K miles on it. It happened between the last time I drove the car, and when I did some interior detailing a couple of weeks later. I never touch that part of the screen, and don't use dressings, other than Lexol on the seats.

I did leave the car uncovered during the two weeks after I drove it, so I was actually wondering if the sun coming through the garage door windows might have been in the right position to "burn" the screen. I've read about folks having strange "burn" damage, evidently from the sun reflecting and causing a sort of magnifying-glass-effect. Other than that, I can't think of a reason.

I'm happy to report that I replaced the screen today, and it looks like new again. Took about 30 minutes. Thanks all for the input!!

Thanks for reporting the final results.....I wish others would do the same. It's always helpful to let all of us know when a issue is resolved. We all "learn" from others.
