Thoughts of engine repair instead of swap

I have a question concerning repairs. Assuming that the repair of a 2.5 or 2.7 litre engine with AlSi liners (like the preferred repair of 997 Mk1 engines) in the event of major damage would be worthwhile or necessary due to the lack of a replacement engine, which piston size could be installed that the Bosch Motronic 7.2 can still handle without having to make changes?
3.2 litre pistons in 2.7 litre engines should work in any case, as the Bosch Motronic 7.2 is used in the 2000 3.2 litre engines.

Is there anything else to consider? Are the connecting rods identical?

I know that engines are (still) cheap at the moment, but who knows how long that will last.
