Nightmare on Xenon Street

After trying to "rejuvenate" my stock halogen headlights with over the counter wonder kits that
promise the world I thought a better option might be to move up to Litronic so I contacted my
local Porsche dealer for a quote...what could possibly go wrong? The next morning I opened
their reply with great excitement only to find a quote of $3582.00 per side with a delivery date
of 2-3 weeks from Germany. After taking two heart pills to quiet me down I realized the rumours
are true...oh the pain! Ordering from the U.S. isn't really an option since exchange & customs
duty will eat up any money I save but I'm hoping that there's a pair of new Litronics out there gathering dust on some shelf that Mother Porsche doesn't know about...that is my dream!

Yep, hard to believe the prices on some of these things direct from Porsche. Even used they are normally $1000 to $1200 for a pair…which is a lot of money for old tech and worn out headlights.

Makes something like the spec D’s look like a better option…even if their quality is suspect. I would love to do a retrofit kit with xenon or LED but I’m trying to stay DOT compliant. Maybe they will finally approve an H7 led for road use. I heard somewhere in Europe did recently. Maybe Germany

On the other hand these cars are 20+ years old now. Try to get some some new spare parts from other manufacturers and you'll be exited to hear that there is nothing available - even not for big big money.

Over here in Germany we have the option to use Porsche H7 LED bulbs on 9x6 halogen headlamps as an officially road legal option for low and high beam. Might be not as good as xenon, but seems to be a real improvement. https://content.eu.porsche.com/prod/pag/classic/ClassicExplorer.nsf/ClassicPartsExplorerProductDetail?ReadForm&country=switzerland-de&se=Boxster%20/%20Cayman&mo=Boxster&my=&ca=&sw=&ge=986&pr=22A490D476D7B7A4C1258A3800431B9C

Maybe it's an option, if you're halogen headlamps are technically OK.

These LEDs can also be used for high beam on litronics.

https://986forum.com/forums/boxster-general-discussions/54697-advice-used-litronics.html

I refurbished some damaged lights a few years ago. Helpful members of this forum guided me through the process. The thread I linked shows how to do it. If you decide to go this route, be prepared to address deteriorated wiring insulation inside the lights. The lights still look good and work well. I have to polish the lenses every few years.

At one time Porsche sold a kit that allowed you to add the high beam rotation function. I don't know whether it is still available. If it isn't, you may be able to salvage the control module and wiring harness from a wrecked car.

Good luck with your project.
