Check Engine Light - Evaporative Emission Control system leak detected??

Hi, Ive got a 2007 Boxster with 102k miles. The check engine light went on. Never saw it before. It says I should 'visit workshop'. Thanks to a poster here i got an OBD scanner and was able to get the error code: P0455 Powertrain - Evaporative Emission Control system leak detected. So the first thing I did was make sure the gas cap wasn't loose. I opened it and closed it a few times, making sure its clicked. That didn't fix it. Is there anything else I can try before I take it to a shop? thanks

I've had that same code for 14 months. I suspect my code originated after I pulled aaway from the gas pump with the hose still in the filler tube. I've until June 2025 to have it corrected. Anhow...

A visual inspection, after having removed the passenger wheel and shroud revealed zero.

JFP (a highly respected member of this forum) recommended a smoke test. That is on the horizon.

What work did you do on the car before the code surfaced? I'd start there.

On another note... I expect to pay $100+ (emphasis on the plus) for the test. If a forum member woould like to recommend an inexpensive smoke machine... I'd aappreciate it.

My (25 year old) gas cap's o-ring inside the car had tiny spider cracks (very difficult to see unless the o-ring is dry). I replaced the cap with a new one and cleaned the metal filler neck's "lip" .....that took care of the CEL.

Just a suggestion....even though you say the cap seals "OK" a new cap is very cheap....so it might be worth trying anyway. That, along with cleaning the filler neck's lip that contacts the cap's o-ring is worth a try.....clear the code and drive for a few days and see if the CEL stays off.
