For those looking for a cost effective muffler upgrade or replacement, the 986.2 muffler is great!
My 2001 S came with a Dansk OE style muffler that developed a rattle when cold and got worse after hitting a big bump on the freeway. I took it to a shop and they opened it up and it turned out that one of the baffles inside had completely rotted off. They removed the baffle and closed it up so i could take my time getting a new muffler....but it didn't sound great with the uneven flow.
After searching for a replacement muffler if came down to a used 986.2 muffler or a Fister modified exhaust. I was afraid the Fister might be too loud for my taste and they are still used mufflers at the end of the day. So I sourced a 986.2 muffler with dual tips on ebay and hoped for the best.
I got the old one out and the new in yesterday. It took about 4hrs all said and done (including jacking the car up and putting it back down). The new muffler fits in easier than the old one. After all the other projects I've tackled I would give this one a 1 or 2 out of 5. Almost too easy for a Porsche project!
From the moment I fired it up, I knew I had a winner. The sound was smooth and deep. When you rev it, especially under heavy load, it has a nice subtle rasp to it. And of course, no drone on the freeway. I'm really enjoying it so far and think the volume and note is perfect for me. I prefer to stay under the radar, especially when wringing the thing out on public roads, so this one works for me.
If you are in the market for one, redline auto parts has a 550 SE muffler with tips for sale at a good price. I think the special tip will fit a 986.1, but can't say for sure.
Keep calm and Boxster on!
