Starting Issues 986

Hello,

About a month ago the car(1998 986 with 996 engine swap) was running great. I pulled into my spot after a drive and turned the car off. As I was walking away I thought I was a little too close to my 4runner so I went back to move it. The car would not start and all I got was a single click/pop/clunk from the engine bay after turning the key. The dash comes on when I turn the key and the open door chime dings. Each turn of the key returns the same single noise. I have replaced the starter relay and the starter itself. Upon checking the fusebox I had one blown fuse. B6, which is power windows, indicator lights and convertible top. My top has been disconnected since I bought the car in 2022. I have replaced the fuse and windows seem to work fine. When I turn the key the tach does not move. All I can think is there is a bad ground somewhere but the starter and battery ground look clean and tight. Where else should I be looking? Is there any other component to check? Thank you.

not sure if this will be the solution for you but it was for my first 99 boxster. After replacing quite a few starting components it ended up being the Crankshaft Position Sensor. My symptoms for starting were youd get complete power everywhere, it wouldnt crank but would give it one single push as if it wanted to. If by some miracle it did after lots of attempts, it would run 100% fine until it turned off and would basically do what it did to you. PartsGeek has em for a good price if you decide you wanna try it out

edit: if you did an engine swap, id 100% look inside and verify everything is connected properly. could also be possible a connector went bad since these cars are pretty old now and swaps are prone to potential damage if youre not 100% careful

The car came with an engine swap, the swap was done in 2013 so it has been running great for 10 years. I'll check the csps, thanks.
