Help! Dealer claims camshaft is bad and needs replacement

Hello Folks

Unfortunately my engine (Box 2.7 2004) needs repair since cyl 4 lost compression due to a broken lifter spring/broken valve...

The dealer quoted me a whooping $13500 (without labour)

I managed to reduce the cost a lot finding some used and aftermarket parts but the camshafts are harder to find.

Dealer said i need new Camshaft because this one is "damaged" due to this discoloration (attached image) and needs replacement. Any expert here please share your opinion

Thanks as always

Once a flat tappet cam begins to wear, it is all over and will fill the entire engine with finely ground metal.

Boy, when I used to work on 944s they pretty much all looked worse than that on every lobe. I think we mostly just lived with it but parts were plentiful on those.
Can a machine shop weld and regrind it?

Yeap i know It’s a damaged cam afterall but is the tiny spot in the red circle the main problem?

Cause I have found few used camshafts on eBay and almost all of them have that kind of dark spot wear on the lobe.

id be surprised if this cam couldn't be built up and reground, I had my 911 done and it has been perfect for years..
maybe new cams are different.
