986 Silver Boxster 2.7 after two stage polish

So just joined the forum and thought I’d introduce my car following a good old clean and detail of the car last week.

I purchased the car December 2020. Admittedly it was a slightly drunken Covid purchase which my eldest two kids egged me on to buy. Paid £4,350 which I think was an error on my part – I could have got it cheaper but selected the wrong option when bidding.

It was a third car at the time. My daily driver being an 2013 F11 535d, plus I also had an E46 M3 manual coupe which I’d bought in 2019. The M3 and Boxster were my ‘fun’ cars. Minimal depreciation, and used when weather is decent.

I’m not a massive convertible fan. Never owned one before but I’ve slowly become smitten with the Boxster over the last 3.5 years. So much so that the E46 has gone as I would choose to drive the Boxster over the M3. Whilst the M3 (and my F11) were quicker, I prefer the manual shift of the Boxster, plus the engine sounds better and more torque in the lower revs. Just has more character to me. The M3 engine sounds good at high revs but lacks low end punch. Looks good, but I really don’t miss it.

Here’s the add from when I bought it - https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2003-porsche-986-boxster-27
  • Pretty poverty spec (which I love!) in Silver with Black leather.
  • Base stereo
  • 5 speed manual
  • 17” wheels (which again I love). Considered buying some 5 spokes but I actually prefer the style of mine and the larger sidewalls means it rides really nicely
  • No tracton control. Dashboard lacking loads of buttons!

But I love it. I’ve since spent about £3k on quite a lot of maintenance summer 2023 to get it back to its best. I think the exhaust still needs sorting and there is a creak in the steering column but apart from that it drives beautifully.

Just put 4 brand new Continental Sport Contact 6s on too which I like (my 5 series has them). Seems to ride so much better (previous tyres were 14 years old Vredsteins).

As per the ad, it’s basically a two owner car, and has been used very sparingly since 2010. The driver’s seat is barely worn and the interior has come up looking great.

I’ve just spent a couple of days machine polishing the paint to bring back to its best. Hard to photo silver, but I’ve removed 90% of the swirls and it’s brought back a real lovely shine. Rear bumper has had work (prior to my ownership and annoyingly wasn't mentioned in ad despite being obvious to my eyes), which I’m debating whether to get properly repaired.

Future plans
  • Have just bought a Continental retro head unit (to give me Bluetooth/Streaming/DAB) and Kicker speakers to bring the existing Becker stereo up to modern standards.
  • Have bought new front number plate holder (current one cracked) and will put a private plate on (have one on retention so may as well use)
  • Will space the wheels but only marginally – somewhere between 7-12mm to fill the arches slightly more
  • Exhaust has a rattle – something not quite right, but thinking of putting something on that looks OEM but perhaps gives a little more growl.
Plan to keep it forever. Costs me next to nothing and has to be worth more than I paid for it. My eldest starts to drive next year so hoping after a couple of years I can get him on the limited miles classic policy I’ve currently got.

Enjoy some pics...
