My 2000 986's water pump had been replaced at 87,000 miles, and I replaced it again myself at 155,000. I have AAA, but I made it home after it started leaking badly. It's not that tough a job or expensive to replace, but be prepared to pay an arm and a leg to have it done. I was quoted $1300. Remarkably, the service department guys weren't wearing masks and guns.
