Wonky roof - question

Hi everyone. This is my first post on this site and I am looking for some advice

I'm fixing a wonky roof on my 2003 Boxster. The problem is the drivers side is not going up at the same rate as the passenger side. And it gets stuck about half way up too.

The drive cable on the drivers was a mess so that is getting replaced. I'm also replacing the gearbox the cable goes to as well as the hinge for the roof and clamshell. The drivers side hinge seems to have a lot more movement in it than the passenger side hinge

What I'm unsure of is whether the (gas) strut on the drivers side hinge might also be contributing to the problem. How easy should it be to compress and decompress this strut?

Thanks in advance
