HELP - mid clutch repair, want to make sure transmission seated properly

Hello - as title mentioned I'm mid transmission install and want to make sure I've seated it correctly. Would it seat down fully if the splines inside werent lined up? Is there any way I can check?

All the bolts are fully in and the faces are seated fully, but not tightened to spec yet. I've heard something about putting the shiifter in reverse and the axles will rotate in the same direction, but Im not sure which setting on the shift selector is reverse?

Any advice on how to confirm that everything is in correctly before continuing would be greatly appreciated

It won't seat fully without the splines being lined up.

I do not think it much matters which gear you put the transmission into, just so long as it is in some gear, so the input shaft turns when you spin an axle flange.
