Ended up dropping the car off to a mechanic I know. Performed the smoke test and a fuel vapor breather line was leaking, changed that and smoke was coming from a gasket around the fuel pump. Swapped both those parts and the howling noise seems to be gone now.

However, still having P0445 engine code. Tried swapping the gas cap and that didn't help either. Mechanic now suspects the fuel filler neck as smoke is no longer coming from anywhere else.
