So this is my first stick shift car and I don't really have a good idea of how to step on the gas and floor this sucker. Needless to say I have been getting an itch to try it. So being its one of the last nice days around chicago, I went with a buddy over lunch and gave it a shot. Being he used to drive a "racing blue" stcik shift escort I asked his advice and he said rev it up and pop out the clutch.
We found an empty street and gave it a shot. Here's where it gets weird, the engine was wailing and we felt a nice push back into our chairs but the car was just sitting there for the most part....not squeling, no tire skip, nothing.....we kind of laughed.....shrugged it off and gave it another shot.....this time we lurched forward slowly but not much to write home about.

My question to you is Daredevil or Dumba#$? Those who listen to a particular sports radio show in chi town will enjoy that.

But seriously, the question is what do you have to do to punch it? I mean the tires smelled like hell when we got out but nothing happened? Did I let the clutch out too slow? Any thoughts? Suggestions, and don't suggest DE because I already plan to go next year when it gets nice out again

I have a Non-S boxster and i have only burned-out from a stop once, I let the RPMs goto 5k and popped the clutch quickly and that was is, I had some wheel hop but thats cause my struts are old. But it works, Dont bounce it off the redline... totally unnessary. But if you want your clutch to die quickly, you wont do that more than twice a year.

I suspect that the smell you describe is not your tires but the burning of your clutch. Violent launches need to release energy somehow, there are only a few ways. 1) The tires slip and screech. 2) The clutch slips 3) The engine bogs as the rpm matches road speed 4) Something in the transmission breaks.

This is not the type of car you want to be burning out on.... The transmissions are relatively strong, but it's really not made for popping the clutch to launch the car. You'll regret it when you fry your clutch or flywheel or both and have to spend about $3k for a new setup. Doesn't mean that when your clutch is not a part of the equation (you're already in gear) you can't just stomp on the gas and learn how your car responds. I like to drive my car sideways through a turn from time to time....

hmmmmm....the smell seemed to be the rear tires....my friend smelled it but I couldn't....I guess cause he's 5'8 and I'm close to 6'2......or he has a better sense of smell
but we got down and it seemed to be the tires that stunk........alright so don't punch it I guess is the moral of the story......

funny thing blink, I was just telling him on the way to lunch how I was really debating getting a new S, only problem is that it looks really no different than my base....I'll just have to wait untill they make some kind of changes to the interior so there is a little more difference in the cars visually.....

I autocross on a regular basis and I've been working on my launches at every event. I have found that going to 2500 RPM and agressively letting the clutch out (DO NOT DROP THE CLUTCH!!!) works the best. If I get to 3000 RPM I usually spin the tires excessively and it slows my launch, wears out the tires, and can't be good on the powertrain (it warms up the tires a little but not enough to warrant the damage I could do to the rest of the car). The idea is to launch your car without excessive damage to your clutch so the idea is not to drop it and potentially damage the powertrain, nor is it good to slip your clutch and wear it out. There's a fine line when trying to take off fast.

BTW - I have a 2002 S.

Dont worry, Ive done it too. It is the clutch, no ifs ands or buts. When I did it I revved it dropped the clutch and the car took off semi fast but the clutch was slipping all the way through. It is like a delicate balancing act. You give her too much gas your slipping to much, not enough and your not going as fast as you can. To tell you the truth, the fastest ive gotten off the line is by slipping the clutch, not dropping it. I am no car tester so im not going to rev it to 6 grand and slip it for a perfect launch, but i will rev it to 2 grand, start to slip while continuing with the gas, you let the momentum of revving it help you. So its like a floor it, almost instant clutch slipping, while letting off gradualy so you dont bog it down. Hope this helps.

EDIT: Ha sammy, you beat me, I was still typing when you wrote that.

so yeah, probably not the tires since it still stinks and this happened hours ago
so I gues what is "burnt clutch syndrome"? I drove all the way home and of course it felt funny to me in a paranoid state....ha....but it drove all the way here no problems....any specific signs I should look out for??

also there is more to the original "don't punch it" morale of the story than I originaly thought: lets add or your car will smell like ass on the outside and burger king on the inside....bad combination.....

last time I drive to lunch!

Motor Trend used the following technique when "gunning" the 987S for it's AMG SLK55 comparo:

"Rev the high-winding six to around 5000 rpm, feather-dump the clutch."

They turned in the fastest published times I've seen for the 3.2 987S:

0-60 - 5.0
0-100 - 12.8
1/4 - 13.4 @103.9

Car and Driver's comment, when testing the 987 base vs. the Solstice was:

"If you’re willing to subject your 240-hp Boxster to a high-rpm clutch drop and ride out the ensuing axle hop, it’ll reach 60 mph in 5.7 seconds and the quarter-mile in 14.3. "

there is a popular saying on another forum I frequent that people use when someone says something that makes no since. I feel compelled to use it here:

No gym for home, work out floor with 30, but is it for 20 like 30 lb when you no lift it to be for men, for 30 lbs instead? or half is 10 for 20 pounds?

All this means is, WTF? my friend smelled it but I couldn't....I guess cause he's 5'8 and I'm close to 6'2.
 to tall to smell it?

good stuff.......it was essentially a joke....he smelled it I couldn't smell it until I I got down closer to the tires to see what he was talking about....but now that its in the garage with the doors closed, boy does it reek!
