99 2.5L Motor Blew...where to buy?

My beloved 99 blew the motor over the weekend at 136K

Where's everyone buying their motors from?

I'm sick to my stomach just typing this.

That's a bummer. A decent motor with around 100k still runs around 4k. Bunch of them on eBay right now. By the time you are done updating and replacing components you likely have a7-8k bill if you are not doing it your self.

Btw, what were your symptoms before, if any that would indicate your motor is going?

Loud pop, smoke flew, and total loss of power.

Any idea of cause? Had the IMS bearing been replaced?

Find a crashed/salvaged car to pull the engine from, usually cheaper than buying just the engine on Ebay. Then part out what you don't need.

I've purchased a crashed '98 base from Copart for $2650 with 54,000 miles (one owner) as well as a 2001 S for $2,000.

Swap with a vag motor, lots of choices, plenty cheap, and a lot less headaches in the long run.

Thank you for the tip. I looked over there too. I don't know if I want to deal with shipping a whole car etc. I don't have time as it is currently.

No idea of the cause as of yet. Shop tried to start it and it locked up at the shop.
I can't say for sure the IMS has been replaced or not.
The car was bought from the original owners estate. I'm the second owner.

Don't go cheap! I got one from someone selling on a forum (and you know who you are) with disastrous results. The first one had intermix--I mean pushing the oil out the rear main intermix. The second one he sent as a replacement had the cams mis-timed. Corrected that, and it seized after 5 minutes. So I'm at $6000 in without a running car. Just go to a reputable seller with a warranty.
Oh--and I'm getting really fast at engine replacements.

If the car isn't your daily driver and you have the funds, consider upsizing. My 99 is waiting for me to purchase a car for my son and a Bronco for me before it goes the 3.6-4.0 route.

Should I just plunk in a 3,2 from an S and go on with life?

OR

Do I have my motor torn down and rebuilt properly?

For me it would all come down to cost to rebuild vs replacement, however I try to improve anything I have to replace/rebuild if possible. I rarely try to use a stock part for a stock part unless it is superior quality or there is not an upgrade option. If you are going to have yours rebuilt why not improve it when doing so? If you improve it during rebuild you get the added smiles of a better version of what you had. Just my take, I am sure others will chime in.

Why not rebuild a 3.2 properly? Pretty sure they can take those out to 3.4L. If I had to choose between rebuilding a 2.5 or putting in a used 3.2 I'd probably go the 3.2 route but fixing some of the most common items.

Mouse and Cookes (look up the childrens book if not familiar)....

3.2 into your car will require LOTS of other changes....Axles, maybe tranny (maybe not) exhaust, DME etc.

If you want the 3.2, go buy a decent S, otherwise just stay with 2.5 to get your car back on the road. Good luck!

After a quick search the cost of a decent S model starts near 14k base models at about 9K. I think he could fix his car for less and already know its history rather than buying a used questionable maintenance car. I am not understanding the part it out logic, no way he makes even half that on parting out his car. Cheapest solution is buying a used 2.5 and get back on the road, or buying an upgrade, from what I read and I could be wrong but all he needs is the engine and DME to move up as long as he buys a 2002 or earlier.

Dont know about you, but my time is worth something, even to myself. a 2.5 engine swap is the cheapest, easiest & quickest method. Could be back on the road in a weekend.

A 2.5 isn't worth all that much to begin with compared to a 2.7 or even an S and much worth even less then an 02/03.

Market is finally starting to come back down to pre-pandemic levels. It isn't there yet, but is starting to get there.

Replace the engine with the same engine or wait till winter and buy a different one.
