PPF / Stone Guard removal from mirror

I’m not sure if it’s film, stone guard or just clear coat, but whatever it’s peeling off my side view mirror. I’ve tried draping a hot towel over it, I’ve tried a clothes steamer and even a lightly applied heat gun to to no avail. Any idea what this is and/or what do do to remove? TIA.

That looks like the clear coat to me. Best case scenario is you sand down the clear without going through the color and respray a clear coat. Generally speaking, other parts of the car are not far behind. Might be time for a new paint job? It is possible that for some reason the mirror has had a subpar repaint and the rest of the car's paint is in good condition though.

I had a similar issue with a silver side mirror. I bought a replacement from a forum member. I kept the old one to sand down and clear coat. I just never did it.

That's clear coat peeling off.

Only 2 options:

1. gently sand (gently = don't break through the silver) and re-clear, OR,

2. sand it down completely, and spray new base coat/clear coat

If you try to wrap with vinyl, you'll likely see the creases from the peeling clear, unless you scuff them down enough.

Thanks for the input all. Paint is good on the rest of the car, including passenger side mirror. I did have the hood resprayed due to rock chips, probably will do the same with the mirror. Odd it’s just one part.

Clear coat on these cars is not that good. Have had multiple cars with clear coat problems. It just doesn't hold up
