Boxster 986 Exhaust - 3 types so far
 

Good day all.
I recently purchased a 1997 Boxster with stock exhaust. I have been upgrading and updating her. One of the first things I researched and decided to upgrade was the stock exhaust. I next tried a China exhaust from Amazon. After watching several videos on DIY I decided to just have purchase the exhaust and have a local shop install as they would not need to remove the bummer and it should be a drop in exchange. It was :) they had them swapped out in under a half hour. I new exhaust fit great, was small and lighter. I really like the dual tips instead of the oval one exhaust. I loved the deeper and louder sound, but Im sure you know what Im going to say next....yes the drone. I thought I could handle it but NO !! between 2600 and 2900 rpm's it was awful. So back to the internet. I read and saw videos of even very expensive systems still have the drone issue, so I thought what can I do the the stock (non-drone) exhaust. I have a friend that can weld and thought lets do the external bypass. After talking to him and figuring out what all that would entail we looked a some other videos of internal bypass and really liked the simplicity of the modifications so off I went to his house with the stock muffler to see how hard it would be. An hour later we had the muffler opened up and drilled the (3) 1 inch bypass holes on each side. The next day I took the muffler back to the shop and had them re-install the original muffler. Again they did it in about 30 min. When I started up off the rack I was disappointed that it just sounded like the stock muffler......then I gave her some gas to back up and ...... oh that is not stock. Off I went down the road with a big smile on my face. The new system is louder with no drone at all. At 3800 rpm it is at its loudest and has a great sound. between 4 and 5k rpms it a bit quieter and over 5k rmp it really comes alive again. I am very happy with the system. I wanted to share my experience as Im sure other have been looking for a good system. Below is a short video of the exhaust comparisons.

Passed by PO many, many times on the way out to my Dad's home in Sequim. Grew up in 98444. Not bragging. ;)

The exhaust with the bypass sounds great. I've seen the vids... read the threads and, after hearing yours (FB vid) that mod is next on my list. I'll consult with the local muffler shop about doing that.

What did you do with the Chan muffler?

Very nicely done, I like it that you took pictures. Some people spend a lot of money on exhaust systems for the 986 and they sound terrible compared to this mod. I did the same to my exhaust last year, but I only drilled two holes because I already had done the Crios mod a few months before that. Mine sounds beautiful and there's no drone at all. I had people ask me if I have an exotic exhaust (whatever that means :confused:) when the car was idling. I am adding tips from a 2003-04 Boxster S, I just finished making a plate to tack weld to the exhaust, I`m hoping to have some free time this week to install them.

Ill look for you passing through. I always flash headlights when I see an Porsche, but mostly only get flashed back from Boxsters. LoL.

I used the Kitsap Muffler shop in Gorst, right along Hwy 16 right after Subaru dealership.

I still have the Amazon muffler and will try to recoup some of the cost selling it. Let me know if you know anyone interested.

How different is the sound as compared to the external, "Pedro-style" bypass. I have the external bypass on my car, and while it sounds awesome at almost all RPM's, there a small band of RPM's where it can sound a little "yappy." I still have the original muffler as an option to putz with.

You'll be looking long and hard, lol. I moved from Washington, again, back in 99 now residing in weather favorable SoCal.

The 101... and part of the 16 running through Bremerton... and whatever is that highway out to Sequim... great twisties.

Was last up there ~8 years ago. Told my family I'd next be up for a funeral. ;)

From what I've seen and heard on the internet the Pedro exhaust mod is much louder than mine. It all depends on how many holes you make and how big they are. Once you open up the exhaust you will see that there are already small holes on the pipe. I only drilled 1 inch holes when I did mine because I already had done the Crios mod so I didn't want it to be to loud.

I watched a couple of videos where the owners said they would have done a third hole if they had to do it again. So I went with (3) 1" holes. Its just right for me.

Got my S tips installed today, didn't come out to bad. Basically I grounded the single tip welds with a dremel ( 4 spots, 2 inside and 2 outside) and then took it off and cut the pipe flush with the muffler with a Sawzall, and then just welded the tips on. They actually sit an 1/8 of an higher than the oval tip.

Didn't like how the S tips looked with the top hook and the oval holes showing :mad:, so I changed them yesterday to some 3 inch tips that I had with carbon built up inside already and just welded them straight onto the muffler, now you can't even see the holes, it blends nicely with the tips. It looks much nicer to me now than the S tips :dance:
Should've just done this the first time :mad:.
