Vibration question

Hello from a new guy, looking for a 986 S. I was test driving a MY2000 manual S w/82k miles today. Everything seems to check out, however when slowing down (foot off gas/no brake) coming from higher revs ~5-6k rpm I notice a low frequency vibration (heard and felt) as the car approaches 3k rpms, then stops at around 2k. The car is being sold from a high performance indy shop who occasionally works on P-cars; the guy from the shop who was riding w/ me said it seemed normal. Just wondering if anyone thinks this might be an issue? The vibration isn't real obvious, but noticeable. I've driven other similar models and don't remember experiencing this.

could be the motor mount, but that is just a guess. If it didn't feel right to you after driving other cars I would pass on it.

One a different note, where are you in CO?

Agree. It's the motor mount.

When the owners manual says that the laws of physics can't be broken by this car, I took it as a challenge...

That's a thought that entered my mind... I started having vibration issues with my 06 Tacoma and it needs new mounts. What cost are we looking at to have these replaced? I can use this in price negotiation.

Stl-986: I am in Loveland

This might be the part you are looking for.

I am going to be in Denver next week. How is the smoke out there, getting any better?

Likely the motor mount, as others have said. On my 2000 base 5 speed the mount was toast at 85K miles and on the spare engine I bought with 97K miles, same thing. My vibration was much worse than what you describe and the new URO mount eliminated it.

Based on comments here and several on the Pelican site the mount seems the culprit, as symptoms are identical. Seems like an easy enough fix, and cheap. Will probably run into other rubber parts that will need replacing, just like any 21 yr old car.

Stl-986: air quality is much better, no haze or smell. Last Saturday was horrible. I heard we had the worst air quality in the world that day!

Thanks for the feedback!

Seemed? When you do buy your next ride stay away from that shop.

I concur: MM
