The Color Orange

Has there ever been a factory Orange color for the Boxster?

I love the color Orange. I want my next Porsche to be orange! I know there is a new 911 Carrera GT3 RS that is orange (with too much black lettering IMHO).

Dr. Kill 11-02-2006 02:14 PM

I have absolutely nothing useful to add here except that my wife really likes the color orange too. Most of the rooms in our house are orange, and I think our next Porsche will wind up being Orange too if it is offered.

bmussatti 11-02-2006 02:19 PM

OK, with a name like Dr.Kill, I feel compelled to say that I have NEVER met your wife. Just to be clear!! :) :)

I went to the University of Illinois...so orange is "in my blood". Please no football jokes here!!

Here is the GT3 RS:

98Boxster98 11-02-2006 02:21 PM

Zanzibar Red is orange-y. In the old days, Porsches came in many colors, including orange.

I knew a guy once who's whole house was orange inside. He was a pimp and drug dealer who went to prison for food stamp fraud. That wasn't you, was it Doc?

Hell, I paid for my car this past Spring with food stamps! Took the dealer a little time to count-out...but it's all good!

food stamp fraud? lol! No, that wasn't me, but hats off to that guy.

cartagena 11-03-2006 06:11 AM

I painted my first car Orange (Dodge Challenger). About 80% of the people I met looked at it in shock and said "why did you paint it Orange?!?!". I even had police ask this as the first question when stopping me. The next year I painted it red and then the same people would come up and say "I liked the Orange better".

Nice car! Too bad you don't still have it - it would probably be worth a fortune.

Have you seen the new ones? I have already been prepping my wife for the purchase once the SRT variants hit the market...

If the dealers don't go crazy, I think I'm going to get one as well. I had planned to buy the new Shelby Mustang but greed overtook the dealers. They're selling the cars for $25,000 over sticker. I refused to pay it.

yeah, 25k over is a bit rediculous for anything, and especially for a Mustang. Have you looked at one of the supercharged Saleen cars as an alternative? I know the horsepower numbers are lower than the GT500, but I seem to remember reading an article that said it was almost as fast and handled quite a bit better.

I expect the SRT prepped Challenger to sticker around $40 - 45k. If the dealer is asking $70k for the car, I would rather just buy a 911 instead.

RandallNeighbour 11-03-2006 11:19 AM

Dr. Kill, if you have the extra cash ($3500 or so?) you can order your new Porsche in any color or flavor you wish. Just send them a paint swatch and they'll match it.

Of course, getting rid of an orange boxster ain't gonna be easy, but hey, sounds like you'd keep an orange boxster a long long time and it wouldn't matter to you.

Yeah, see that is part of the appeal. I think my next Porsche needs to be a 911. I think it would make sense to pay a little extra to get it exactly like I want it, and then never sell it and use something else as my DD. My wife, God bless her, is very tolerant of my expensive hobbies, but at $85k for a car I don't need or use every day, it might prompt her to ask about it. I figure if I say it is going to be orange, it should help maintain her excitement levels and make the purchase easier for all of us.

Grizzly 11-03-2006 11:26 AM

Saleen builds a nice car. I used to have a SA-10. The point for me was having a new Shelby. This may be our last opportunity to own a real Shelby Mustang that Carroll was actually a part of (small part perhaps, but still a part). Unfortunately, the dealers went nuts, people are willing to pay up and real collectors, like me, get shut out.

I've always thought that brand loyalty and past history should count for something when limited cars come out. Ford should look and say, "Oh yeah, he's bought six new Mustangs from us and he currently has four vintage ones in his collection. Let's put him at the top of the list." Of course, they don't. Whoever has the most scratch gets the car. If it's a 19 year old dope dealer who runs it into a utility pole, so be it. As long as Ford and the dealer make their money.

I figure at a projected 7000 cars per year the exclusivity won't be there and they'll become completely attainable, but I wanted a very low serial number car. Didn't happen, so I'll move on.

RandallNeighbour 11-03-2006 12:44 PM

Grizz, Ford can't afford to play favorites these days. They're bleeding so badly financially that they have to be cash-driven in every decision they make... good or bad.

Yeah, it's a shame really. How many people are they laying off? Last I heard, the plan was somewhere around 60,000 between them and GM.

I read last year that every GM car has about $1,600 in fixed cost to cover their retired employees health care insurance!

RandallNeighbour 11-03-2006 01:12 PM

I also heard that Mercedes is breaking it off with Chrysler. Don't know if that's urban legend or the truth, but it wouldn't surprise me if it happened.

American car companies better do something radical and do it soon if they want to retain automobile manufacturing in any form.

that is a great color, looks great at night and during the day under full sun.
Also stays clean pretty well.
If I was looking for a totally obnoxious color for my next fully optioned Pcar
I would go for that in a heart beat, maybe yellow but all yellows are not the same.

You know, I was willing to pay the $45,000+ sticker for their car because it's a limited vehicle. They pissed me off, so I'm probably going to buy the Dodge. In 2001, I wanted to buy my wife the new T-Bird. It was the same story, $8,500 over sticker. Two years later, they couldn't give those T-Birds away and eventually discontinued them. Right there, that's 85 grand that I wanted to give to Ford. They chose to lose it to other car companies. I bleed Ford Blue, but how many times do you think I'll allow them to reject me before I don't even consider Ford when choosing a car? If I live 40 more years, I'll likely buy 40 more cars (assuming Ellen and I can still drive into our 80s). That's 1.6 million in sales that may very well go elsewhere. And I'm just one customer.

...forest for the trees...

Nick, I'll remind you of this statement when I show up someday at a Chicago PCA event in my orange 911 Carrera GT3 RS!! :)

FYI- My kids buy me stuff all the time that's orange for Father's Day, Birthday and Christmas. And most of the pictures they draw me have orange as the major color!!

Hmm, my brother-in-law works for Chrysler Europe - I hope they don't split, that will hit him and my sister pretty hard. That relationship has been very good for Chrysler

Yeah, I heard the same thing about the rediculous overhead costs. I want to place the blame on our lovely unions, but I really don't have any information to support my position.

You wouldn't have to look far to find the evidence to place blame for this mess squarely on the shoulders of the unions. As much as I'd like to feel sorry for the American auto worker, I can't. Did they really think that the American car makers were going to be able to support this pyramid forever? The factory workers weren't crying when they went out on strike after strike, always looking for more, more, more and holding the industry hostage. A few weeks ago one of the big evening news shows had a good story about the whole mess. They said the average auto worker's salary is six digits, counting O.T. but not benefits. Now we're supposed to feel sorry for them while they cry on TV about losing their jobs and acting like the world owes them something? The truth of the matter is that their greed drove the American Auto Makers into the ground and the unions were holding the reins. How long did the unions think the automakers could stay one up on the Asian manufacturers while supporting those salaries, benefits and retirement packages?

pecivil 11-03-2006 02:14 PM

thats just it, they didn't think, just grab the $$$ and run

if any of them were smart, they have been saving for this rainy day you know was coming.

what is really sad is it is leading to the failure of the companies

and failed companies can't pay for retirees health insurance, can they?

cartagena 11-03-2006 05:37 PM

It was a big rusted out piece of body filler the day it went to the junkyard. Was probably crushed and made into coke cans. :(

I would not mind getting a new but I could never get it serviced where I live.

I will worship you if you show up in a Orange RS ( especially if you give me a ride :p ).

Just be sure to give me first dibs before you trade in that beautiful white Boxster of yours :D !

Theoretically, those funds should be in a fund somewhere and protected.

Interesting, but the management still had to agree to the contract and the average auto worker in Japan makes about the same as an old line US worker so maybe the real issue is productivity. In fact if you think about it a bit why is it that Toyota, Honda, Kia & Hyndai can build plants in the USA and still make money, must be that productivity/management and building something that people want to puchase can make the difference.

Just my 2 cents and I am not a bleeding heart as I have moved several factories to low cost countries and will do so when it makes cent$.

BuffaloBoxster 11-06-2006 07:41 AM

Toyota in particular pay very well and trat their employees like gold just to keep the UAW out of their North American operations.

I like the orange. A friend of mine has a '76 911 in "continental" orange. Seems similar to the new GT3-RS pic colors. Another friend had a signal orange 914. I guess the 1970's were good to Orange (think safety colors). While not a standard Boxster color, Porsche will paint your car to match ANY color, for a fee (likely $3-5K).

Orange exterior, White interior. mmm Creamsicles shall rise up again!
