I did. That is a very strong price for a base 986 + commission. $8K price run up in the last ten minutes.

Indeed, that's $27,300 with BaT's 5% commission. Now add tax and license fee's. In California, that makes it really close to $30K.

I’ve been watching BaT lately and it seems like many cars are going for more than asking price of an equivalent car on Autotrader.

I watch BaT all the time. There are no deals, every Porsche that sells is way over its actual value. And this is a perfect example of that: 5 owners, original IMS, white with gray, no special options. Kinda dumb, but good for the seller I guess.

It’s called marketing. I’ve had houses I could not sell. I found by changing the way I market them and raise the price a little bit and they move.

It`s called many things. I would call it, " Money can`t buy brains" or " There's a dummy born everyday", etc,. I can go on and on.

I took the time to read the last ten auction minutes of the running comments. The winner posted the following;

It’s good to hear nice comments. To explain a bit. I’m 81. My wife & I love road trips. We will fly to pick up this car to drive back home. Have had Porsches since the early 60’s, but all 356’s, my real love. I’ve got my 3rd kind of cancer, but under control. I love white. I love the interior. We have always had a 356 coupe and a convertible. I’ll be selling our ’05 S2000 on BaT soon to make room for this car."

My wife and I are closing in on 40 years together. If I make it to 81, I will gladly overpay to enjoy that road trip. Safe travels.

My oh my !! $26k for a 2004 Base Boxster !!

Seller is a dealer too, which means you know very little about the car's history.

I have a very clean 2004 Boxster S, very well maintained with 55k miles and a $2,000 audio upgrade. I'm not looking to sell it but when that day comes I'm going to sell it on BAT.

It’s simple really....

...new cars have become rolling computers with flappy paddle shifters and are not fun to drive.

The 986 is one of the last truly fun cars to drive. It also gets you into the Porsche Universe for folks who place value on clubs and “impressing” people with brands.

New car pricing has risen out of reach for most people. The new Boxster that I would really want to own is about $100,000 these days.

When buying a used car, you are always better off buying the best quality one you can find, as opposed to buying a fixer-upper.

For a lot of folks out there who DO have a lot of money, saving TIME is more important to them than saving money. BAT eliminates a lot of the hassle and time suck of searching for a quality car. That fee makes sense to you if you value your TIME as much as you value your money.

You can always make more money, but you can’t get tomorrow back.

And since 996 Carreras are now harder to find in the low $20k range, I suspect that it could be dragging up 986 prices as well. My non-expert opinion thinks it's still too early to tell if it's a fad or if it's the start of a trend.

I also agree part of it is the presentation of the car on these auction sites as well as interaction with sellers in the comments section. There's a certain level of trust that's built up with all the photos and write ups with the auction sites like bringatrailer or pcarmarket that you don't have with other used car sales sites like Autotrader. People are going to pay a premium price for that confidence especially if it's a vehicle that you can't see in person.

....996 values are climbing as well.

The 986/996 bottomed out in 2015 and have been climbing ever since. That makes sense. They ended production in 2004. So call it ten years after, the depreciation curve bottomed out. Remember, federal law says car companies have to support a car with spare parts for ten years after production, so the sweet spot for buying most used cars is about eight years after production.

Fortunately for us, Porsche has decided to support the 986 in their “Classic” department and they have committed to producing parts and providing service for the 986 forever.

If you find a good one, you better jump on her now.

I bought my 2004 “50 years of 550 Spyder Edition” in 2015.

I paid top dollar for a very low miles, one owner, well maintained car. I thought I over paid quite a bit at the time, but I knew I had found the EXACT car with the EXACT equipment I wanted to own forever.

Looking at the market today, I know I actually bought her right. I’m glad I pulled the trigger when I did.
