The top drive system on the the Boxster is elegantly simple. One small electric motor drives to cables (think old bicycle speedometer cables) that are connected to a gear set on each side (top transmissions).
Start with easy stuff...get some lithium grease and grease the tracks and pivot points. If no improvement. Look at transmissions as they have plastic gears and my have lost a tooth or two. Easy DYI. You can get used parts and save a few $$ if needed.
