What is the "ususal and customary" service fee from independent Porsche mechanic for replacement of a starter motor for 1998 Boxster? A range would be helpful.

A Porsche indie should charge $100-$120 per hour labor. There may be a one hour minimum charge. If you have a good established relationship with the shop you may be able to get away cheaper, as the job can be done in less than an hour.

A Porsche dealership will charge about $180 per hour labor, one hour minimum charge, possibly take longer than an hour, and then add on additional "shop fees" for rags, coffee, fingernail polish, etc.

A reasonable shop will charge 2 hrs labor + $300 for the part, so expect a total around $500. Don't be shocked if someone quotes up to $700 total ($300 labor + $400 parts).

So an expected range is $500 -$700. If you can get a quote for under $500 from a Porsche-specific shop, that's a pretty good deal.

Why don't you do it yourself? You could have the old out, and the new in... in ~hour if you're prepared going in.

I done it in my carport... and am preparing to do it again. Maybe today.

I got the original rebuilt (about $160 CDN) at a specialty shop for starters and alternators and managed to install it myself as well following the same YouTube channel from Burner. Replaced the AOS and cleaned the air intakes while I was at it.
