Is this the proper jacking point for a 986?

location absolutely yes, but make sure you use a log splitting maul or similar device on the jack pad to ensure the jack stays centered between the tailpipe tips while lifting.

Yes. Correct way. When high enough just insert 2X1 T stand with a lower earthquake resistant extender (3 pcs total), remove jack to prevent ankle bruises or cuts, and done.

That appears to be an aftermarket muffler so there was no need for the piece of plywood on the jack
