Update: The electrical portion on the back of the switch was the cause. This part also has the return spring (turns key back to run from start) and stops for how far the key is supposed to turn when off. Both the spring and stops in mine where broken and caused all my problems.

So...you JUST replaced the electrical portion? Did order the part (Audi) and did you replace it yourself?.......I ask because I plan on doing the same when my car comes out of winter storage. Difficulty? Costs? etc etc.
