Wheel Center caps
Stupid expensive on e_bay right now. Anyone got a current source? Doesn't have to be OEM but don't want a sticker either.....

 |
I bought a set off eBay about a year and a half ago and they were CHEAP....only about $10 for 4 w/free shipping. Not OEM but they look great and have held up nicely. Tons to scroll through.....keep looking.

The CL caps arrived in OEM packaging, each individually sealed (I know they're not OEM). Even the center crests had that protective film. 2 years later and my caps look brand new. Looking forward to the results you produce. Thanks! |

Not to pile on, but I didn't see any $10 sets either. The $50 CL set looks like the best deal.

WOW!....things have changed since I bought my set. My appologies to not have the update on their costs. Maybe I should "lock" mine on with glue!...lol.
But I did see these: Check these out.... $9.99 https://thegzcar.com/products/4pcs-56-5mm-car-porsche-aluminum-car-wheel-center-caps-sticker-emblem-decoration?variant=24551043792996&utm_medium=cpc&u tm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&cm p_id=1728879070&adg_id=68076186376&kwd=&device=c&g clid=EAIaIQobChMI35LSsMu35QIVRdbACh0VSQReEAQYBSABE gITN_D_BwE Check these out.....$40 but will take an offer: |

They can still be found on aliexpress, though they can’t show the crest or use the name “Porsche” in the ads, so hard to say what the quality will be, but I’ve had excellent luck. The search terms used for this screen shot were “Porsche wheel cap”: |

Here's my stash...
The first 2 rows are the caps from CL, and I have two sets installed upon my 2 sets of wheels. These are my spares. The second 2 rows are OEM. At one point I removed one emblem... ascertaining they are metal. The last row was my first wheel cqap purchase thinking I could install 3-D stickers. Didn't like them, although the color works for me. Those CL caps... on eBay someone is asking $89 for the set. A new set of OEM caps, eBay... $299. Used OEM, on eBay, are $30 each, and look real used. Attachment 22098 |
I just ordered 4 from ailexpress.. my total was 10.82 with shipping etc...
says shipping around 11/12.. will report back with what they look like. |

Well at least I know I'm crazy. I appreciate the help. I'd see these caps all over ebay when I had no use for them. No I need a set, no joy!
I've seen the Huntington Beach CL crests advertised on local CL but the ad was so old I was reluctant to contact the buyer. I'll probably go with them. This is kind of like looking for 'Porsche' stickers for calipers...used to be pages of them but no so much anymore. |

I've bought center caps from a chinese seller on eBay and though they were cheap, they were also utter crap. Lost two of them while tracking the car... :D
|
I also ordered the set from ailexpress, and for $11 they look pretty good. Although I have my doubts that they will be as durable as the stock caps, they do seem like a pretty good value!
The silver and black caps are what is on the car now, so these should add some color to my silver and black Boxster. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1575851067.jpg |

The wheels get really hot driving at the track and expand a little. That expansion makes the center caps looser. If they pop out on the track, they present a hazard and could cause as skid or damage to a car on the track |
I've never had my center caps come off at the track, but I probably will take them out for track events now that I think about it. I do have an extra set of wheels that I bought off of CL that are kind of rough cosmetically, so no big deal to take the caps off.
BTW, do you know how hot the wheel would have to get to expand enough for the caps to come off easily? I'm guessing it would be hundreds of degrees, so that isn't why the caps can fly off at the track. The reason is because of the extra vibration from running over alligator curbs while cornering hard. Combine that with old, loose caps, and ping! off they go. |

IIRC, our PCA club requires them to be removed for track events. |
I'm a bit vain, I guess.
I put a couple dabs of silicone on the center caps when I put them in. They're not coming out at the track. And I use ALL the track.... gator teeth and all. ;-) Sent from my SM-G970U using Tapatalk |
I'm thinking that for aluminum to get hot enough to expand that much, the tires would start to melt. But we can agree to disagree, JayG.
Good idea, Maytag. I might do that with my $11 new caps. I'd hate to loose what must be one of the least expensive parts on my Porsche. Last weekend I finally fixed my window regulator problem on the passenger door, to the tune of a new regulator and then a latch unit. $700 in parts! The $11 for the caps seems to be too good to be true. |
