Rob, the wear will be on the wheel bearings as you would be increasing the load on them, these are not to expensive but are a bear to remove from the hubs..
The longer lug nuts are to compensate the extra thickness of the spacers (as you need to have a minimum amount of threads to be safe), usually the companies that sell the spacers also offer the longer lug nuts.

However, when my 987 died I remove the spacers (7mm and 15mm) and put them on the 981, because they just look great
