Dealer won't give me maintenance records?

The person I bought my 03 Boxster from had it serviced at the local Porsche dealer. I called them and told them I bought the car and wanted a copy of the service records. They wouldn't give them to me because they were in the prior owners name.

Anyone have any thoughts as to how I could get them?

Download mycarfax to your phone and enter your VIN. There is no charge. I had the same issue with my dealer.

Ask the PO to call the dealership and give them permission to release the records.

Local? I would walk in. I understand they don't want to hand them out for security reasons. I've always found them happy to read off the last few (date/miles/service) and search for specific items - clutch replacement, etc.

The records will have PO's address on them. Dealer won't want to give that out unless they've gotten permission first.

+1

This has worked for me when qualifying a vehicle. Always had dealer records, either from the PO or the dealer, upon purchase.

I was told this by the dealer when I tried to get the records for my 986.

It's a law, that's why some dealers won't give the records to you.

Drivers Privacy Protection Act

Not really sure if it's that big of problem but dealers dont want to get in trouble so they dont take chances. All it takes is that one jerk. We even got new titles on every trade in so no previous info was on title.

Ask the dealer to fill out the service records book.
That way they are only giving you the car info, nothing else.
It might help to buy the book from the parts dept

When I bought my 2006 BMW several years ago from the dealer that had sold it to the original owner I asked for the service records. The service manager made paper copies of all the records and simply used scissors to remove the previous owner's private information. Wasn't a problem at all.
