Exhaust swap

Looking for input ... my 01 2.7 stock exhaust is far to quiet. Really considering one off Amazon or ebay with test pipes. SOme of the reading I've done is that helps with the drone. I drive my car almost every day and seem to be in the 2-3k RPM range which where it seems the drone is worst.

I have about $500 to spend so can't afford Fabspeed, Borla, etc. While the concept of saving for more expensive makes sense, I can't justify a $1k+ exhaust to my lovely wife either.

So, thoughts? For those that have done the cheap exhaust with test pipes, how does it sound? Loud doesn't bother me as much as drone.

not adverse to used if anyone has something for sale either ...

Thanks

All the cheap mufflers drone based off my research your best bet would be either saving up for a fabspeed or fvd exhaust. Or modifying your stock muffler. If you are in a place where you can run secondary delete pipes that will give a bit more sound I beleive.

Topspeed secondary delete pipes do add a bit of sound and are really not expensive. No drone added.

What's the best place to buy them? Good place to start I believe.

Thanks!

I bought a set from eBay but I see that they are currently unavailable. I have since changed them out for headers and high flow cats so if you are interested, I can sell you mine for $75 plus shipping.

Contact Top Speed directly, they used to give 986 Forum members a discount, I don’t know if they still do.

is there any real difference in the Top Speed vs. Beluga Racing or the no-name on Amazon? Top Speed is about $80 more than Beluga Racing on ebay. They look almost identical. I'd prefer to get the cheaper one if it's all the same (my wife is already harassing me about spending $$ on exhaust ...)

Thanks

They are pretty much all the same. The main difference being different tips.

One step at a time

If I were in your shoes, before I would spend any time or money fiddling with a new muffler, I would instead delete the secondary cats (as many other folks have also done).

See post no. 8 in this thread: Secondary catalytic converters for sale.

If you know of a buddy who has a welder, your cost is zero dollars - just some wrenching time. And since you reuse your OEM pipes, you are assured of a perfect fit, which is often not the case when aftermarket pipes are tried.

I have made this same recommendation numerous times, and I have never heard of anyone who regrets the work.

This will increase the sound somewhat, which is your stated goal. Then, if it is not quite enough for you, your next step could be a muffler swap.

I installed the cat delete pipes, and did the muffler mod (basically poking a sharp rod into the tailpipes as they come out of the muffler). It is somewhat louder inside the car, with a lower, more guttural tone. I'm happy, and it only cost me around $100 for the cat delete pipes. Much cheaper than a new system, and no drone.

Smile Muffler delete

I felt the same way about my exhaust and the cost to upgrade to something better. Recently I had a problem with my trunk actuator and had to practically disassemble the entire rear of my car. In the process I removed the muffler. The sound was exactly what I wanted. A little loud but pretty acceptable. Then I had two exhaust pipes made to replace the muffler. The go from the u-bend pipes toward the center of the car then 90 degrees out the back. That cut down the sound to almost perfect for me. I have ordered two tips from summit and I will be all set. The pipes cost $50.00 installed, the tips are $18.00 a piece. So for $100 i have what I wanted. I live in California, so I have to keep all 4 cats to be legal and to get it smogged. Send me a message at 530-304-7990 and I'll send you some pictures. 2000 base Boxster 2.7 muffler delete.
