Brake Job question

I just replaced my front rotors, pads, dampers and wear sensors. I didn't take it out to bed the pads yet but I did have to move it and took a quick trip around my neighborhood.

Is it normal to hear what sounds like metal on metal or some kind of grind when applying the brakes for the first time before bedding them in? While each side was in the air I spun the wheels and the rotors/pads moved freely so I think everything was done correctly. This is the first time I have ever replaced pads or rotors so I was curious.

Thanks in advance.

There may be some noise, but it shouldn't be loud. What kind of pads did you install?

Are you sure you didn't bend the splash guards (thin sheet metal) and they are rubbing on the rotors? If that were the case, you'd hear it when spinning the wheel, though.

All you can do is go try to bed the pads in and see if it quiets down. If not, then time to investigate. Brakes are pretty simple, if you did something wrong, it should be easy to spot.

Garage
Jack each corner up, one at a time, and try to turn the tire by hand. It should be obvious which corner is rubbing. Good luck.

Or you could have done what I did once. I put the pad in backwards. It's easy to do if you're not paying attention. I was forwarned about the noisy brakes. By the time I figured out what was going on the new pads and rotors we shot. Just one side of one but you can't just buy one soo

Thanks for the replies. I used Zimmerman coated rotors and Hawk HPS pads. There is only a slight noise when actually pressing the brakes hard and I would have thought it was the pads (or rotors) initially wearing off something. The wheels spun freely with no noise in the air and I was careful not to damage the shields once how saw how close they were to the rotor.

I will bed them today and see how the sound is. As mentioned, this is the first time I have done brakes or rotors and it seems normal but I wanted to ask a more seasoned group.

In one post, I had read someone put them in backwards so I was pretty careful but luckily the rims on the '04 SE are so open I can double check that without taken the wheel off.
