something broke?

I am accelerating hard, and boom, I lose all forward momentum. Engine runs fine. Idles and revs with no issues. Car goes into gear, but nothing when I try to accelerate. Broken axle??

Sounds that way. Trans output shaft bolts sheared or fell out would be my guess.

Could also be the splines on the axle. Had that problem on a Fiat I owned many years ago. Starting at a red light, RRRRRRRRR, and no forward motion.

Clutch. Transmission. Drive shafts.

Should be pretty easy to diagnose.

Driver's side axle (left side). Bolts probably became loose then some fell out and others broke.

I am leaning towards that. I layed down on my back and gave the bolt I could reach a jiggle. It moved.

I had the car towed to a shop, and their diagnosis was the clutch. A clutch doesn't go from gripping completely to absolutely nothing. I am doubting their diagnosis. However, it was made before even putting the car on a lift.

oh yes it does! hahaha. It can, and it does. Not every time, but a catastrophic failure of the clutch can ABSOLUTELY do that. As mine did just a couple of weeks ago.

But that certainly would make some abnormal noise when you tried to move. I have none.

Abnormal noise for a moment, yup. but not much after that. the center of the disc was completely separated from the outer. It was perfectly happy just spinning away int here. hahaha.

No, I'm not suggesting yours did this. In all my years, I've never seen another do this. But I HAVE had clutches that went "suddenly". But in every case, (other than the one in the photo) the car continued to drive just fine, you just couldn't disengage the clutch (nothing happened when you pressed the pedal)
