Ignition will not start

Hi,
Last week I finally got around to buying myself a well taken care of Porsche Boxster 986 '97. The PPI and from testing it myself for about 1000km it seemed in very good condition. Now I do though have an issue staring the car, sometimes it starts right up, and other times it is just cranking for as long as I hold the key.

Here is a link to a video showing the situaion:
https://youtu.be/stCoNvBtcAg

Have seen other discussions about this which a lot of them landed on the crank sensor, though as my needle seems to be moving I can't see how its likely that that is the reason. Any ideas to what it could be?

PS after trying for about 5 minutes it usually works, and did so that time to.

The first thing that got my attention from your video is number of warning light turned on when you first turn the key to the ignition position.

I might be wrong because your car is a 1997. But in my 2002 it looks more like the photo below when switched to the ignition. Could this be a sign of a bad ignition switch ? It is a common problem on our boxster.

Just guessing here !

Another one to look at is the switch at the clutch pedal !

A duramteric check would certainly tell you more !

I'm with pomerlo on this. I'd take note of how many lamps are illuminated on the occasions that it DOES start.

Agree with above but want to add the following...
When cranking the car without it wanting to start, look at your Tach and see what RPM's its displaying. If 0, your crank position sensor is bad. If anything other than 0, replace your ignition switch.

Given that the car is new to you, an ignition switch replacement is money well spent. In the USA, its a $15 part that will eliminate all sorts of potentially weird behaviour, from lighting and AC problems to stereos that won't work (amongst other things).
