Question Who still have their 986?

I've owned mine for 10 years now and with the mileage I have I think it's time for an upgrade.

Deciding between 987.2 and 981. Not crazy about the 981 but hard to find a low mileage 987.2...

We had a great little 986. Then I wrecked it in December. In January we got a newer 986 Boxster S. It's a low-mile car that has been well taken care of and I love it. We also considered 987, but for the price difference it just didn't make sense for us. There's nothing wrong with the way the 986 drives / handles. It doesn't have all the latest tech, but that's (A) not something that bothers me and (B) isn't something a 987 would fix.

I suppose it all depends on what you're after. I like the car, like the dynamics it provides, and it just doesn't cost a whole lot to buy or own.

I really like the simple and almost raw driving dynamics of my Boxster.
No electronic nannies to save my bacon, except the ABS.
I’ve had mine for7 years now, and couldn’t picture myself in a newer car.

Even after disaster happened... I still feel the same way!

How many miles?

I'm a rookie with less than 2-year ownership of a Boxster (huge upgrade from my first P-car, '72 914-4 still sitting on stands in my garage...), 81K miles on it and counting daily... Still long way to go, I hope, with my trusty original dual row IMSB!

Ditto for me, I have driven 987's, Cayman& 981's I prefer my 2000 S, maybe due to my built engine.

My future 'upgrade' would be something like your car! Just installed a 996 cable TB for a starter!!!

Familiarity helps one stick with what they've got.

I'm in the same boat. My car is a 2000S that I've owned almost 10 years. Its friggin great! I get the itch for a newer version (987 and 991 both appeal). When I've driven a newer car, last being a 2010 base, I enjoyed the newer car but it didn't feel twice as good as my current car even though the price twice as much.

The problem with contentment is never changing. I have a 1984 Alfa Spider that isn't half the car that my Boxster is but I can't seem to part with it.

My 2002 4Runner isn't nearly as fuel efficient or comfortable as our 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport but I can't seem to part with the 4Runner.

I see a pattern. Maybe age related but I don't swoon for every new thing that comes out like I used to.

6+ years and 47k miles. She is @ 99100k miles so I should hit 100k this Summer. Always depressed when I pull it into the garage after a drive.
I could never see myself buying one of these new or spending $30k-$50k on a newer used model. If I had those $$$ I might buy a 911 or a Caymen
I'm going back and forth now about possibly moving out of the Boxster and into a 4-5 year old Audi S4. That could be done in the $23k range. I could use it a lot more but I know it just wouldn't give me the same driver's feeling and grin factor. That's priceless

I also thought about moving to a 911 when we replaced our Arena Red Boxster. Ultimately, I couldn't justify the price difference. The 986 Boxsters are pretty well fully depreciated and good ones can be had for not a lot of money. The 911 still commands a pretty hefty premium, and might be... what... 20% "better" than a Boxster? I know, that's a debate that can go in many directions.

I'd stay away from Audi unless you're really itching to be well-acquainted with a mechanic. BMW and Audi don't age as gracefully as Porsche and Mercedes.

Another consideration for Boxster replacement was a Mercedes SL. At the end of the day that's just a German version of what we already have a lot of (Corvette, GM F-body) so we landed back in Boxster land.

I sold my original one about a year after I bought it.
...and ever since have been on a trend of buying two and selling one every year.

2 years in

Hi Im 2 years in on my 2000S and cant see me ever selling it unless it blows up.

I love how its got Zero mod cons that my Passat has. I like and use the tech in the Passat but dont miss it at all when im in the Porsche.

I must be getting old because it saddens me to see how much software is on cars now. Even regular speedos and needles are a thing of the past now.

my 22 yo old daughter would describe an F1 McLaren as rubbish because it wouldn't connect to her iPhone.

we will be throwing perfectly good cars away soon just because the tech in them is 3 years old.

Bought my 986 in 2011. It now has 235,000 miles on original motor, transmission, IMS. Etc. recent suspension refresh/mild upgrade. I can’t imagine another car I would like as much.
