Whale tail on a boxster
now before everyone pukes at the thought, heres a pic of werk52 boxster,
I dont know why I like it but I do, I dont like the whale tails even on a 930 haha http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1499829238.jpg |
Negative...
...Ghostrider.
|
Gee Thanks.....Now instead of puking at the thought I can Puke at the real thing. There are zero lines that make sense on that car. :barf:
Here's a thought; The whale tail looks good only because those fender flares look so bad. |
I think it would look better with a 993 turbo style wing. I'm not a huge fan of the big rubber lip on the older cars. Having said that, its kinda pointless because it doesn't actually cool the car like its meant to. Interesting nonetheless.
|
This thing isn't that bad at all. I'm a bit of a purist but this is all rather "Porsche."
I approve. Few boxsters look that good after that much modification. I specifically enjoy the wheels and color choice. |
I've seen worse things.
Actually, no I haven't. |
No........
|
If a mod makes you happy, then go for it. No one else has to drive it.
That said, I think it destroys the lines, the whale tale is way too square. |
How do I unsee that?
|
Not for me.
Any data on how well it ventilates the trunk? |
Can you imagine how light the front end feels at speed?
|
Not as bad as I thought it would look.

Maybe you could fit a big oil cooler in there...
|
Bigger sin, IMHO, is hanging flares on it and not spacing the wheels out. Nice color though.
|
I like the color of the car, maybe it has a dual purpose. It could be used for a luggage rack too, lol.
|
I kind of like it. It would probably look better without the vents. If you had one without the vents, you could increase the trunk volume. :D
If you're going to modify your car, you might as well go all the way. I think it works with the wide fenders. |
I like it but I think it is a "whole" package deal. The color/stripe/wheels all give a older vibe
|
like the concept, but struggle with the big gap between the end of the roof and the start of the whale tail; wonder what it would look like on a cayman?
|
One of the rules that Porsche designers/engineers live by is form follows function. In the case of this whale tail, what function does it provide? Certainly not cooling or air flow, maybe some down force. And why the vents? It is not rear engined or air cooled.
Sometimes less is more and in this case way less would make more sense. Now, add turbo or supercharging with the plumbing and intercoolers where the trunk is . . . and now you have a reason for the vents and tail. |
I was never a concours/keep it stock guy. To each their own.
Form follows function sounds logical, but IMO good design STILL depends on harmony/balance, and beauty ....well, is defined by a lot of individual factors. http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1499892954.jpg That spoiler lip is too much for my taste. Someone get me my Photoshop...voila...better now. BALANCED  http://986forum.com/forums/uploads02...1499885974.jpg Edit: Fender flares and (wide) body kits are not really my cup of tea...that's why I had to photoshop them, too. ;) |
The Boxsters look good stock. I don't care for the tail. But, the flares really don't look right to me. I do like the color and the graphics.

I like it. Why not try something different. But I'm not sure about roadster with a whale tail. Seems very 1980's Miami Vice.
Might be better on a Coxster. My old boss heard an older co-worker bought a Carrera with a whale tail and thought it was absolutely hysterical. He kept saying "He bought a car with a whale tail! A whale tail!!!". P.s. I'm not a fan of lowering a Boxster that much. Makes it look like it's just for show at the cost of compromising the ride quality and possibly handling depending where it's being driven. |
Gag me with a spoon!!
YUK Oh yea, who knows what it will do to the handling of the car. Could be good, or very bad |

I think that's why this car has a soft spot in my heart lol As our boxsters age we're seeing slightly less mods that update the cars (led lighting etc) and more that give them a more retro feel! I think it's a fun development. |
Hey, why don't you put a header scoop on the hood?
Oh, thats right, there's no engine under there. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk |

The whale tail wasn't PORSCHE's ...let's say....best looking design. On the other hand it still is original PORSCHE equipment. That is ALWAYS a plus. I think, after MY PHOTOSHOP spoiler lip deletion, it could look even better than those GT4 spoilers on a Boxster. GT4 spoiler on a Cayman = great, on Boxster = not so great. Actually, I need more photos (different angles) to get a better idea Rusty, do you have some more photos? Practical use...BBQ grill maybe, or...how about an air cooled storage and stand for some cool drinks at the beach...possibilities are endless. :D |
I been wanting to do something similar but with the Z Top.
