It's a pretty painless process to install them.
Same here. They tell you to put some screws in the bodywork for the brackets, but I only used the double sided tape and the 5 or so screws and clips each side provided for securing them under the skirts, plus the ones in the front and back wheel wells. No need to screw into the bodywork at all.

Having never done this type of modification, I would assume that you buy them, take them to a body shop to have them painted and then mount them as stated? On average, are they expensive to paint?

I took them to a body shop to have them painted for around $250, and then I mounted them with the help of a friend. I don't like anyone else handling my car if I don't have to. I just gave them one of my painted bumperettes to use to match the paint perfectly.
