Diminishing Marginal Utility

What is it with Porsche? I am contemplating and I came to think, Porsche seems to have one thing it truly exceeds at more than any other manufacturer by a long shot. There is very little diminishing marginal utility. Jerry Seinfeld owns 10 boxster's. We have several members here that couldn't stop at one. Especially when the broaden the range to all flat 6 Porsche sports cars, there is simply little reason to stop.

How many flat 6 p cars could you own before you call it quits?

I probably shouldn't say this being one of your drug dealer's, but you have a problem. How many are you up to now?

Flat sixs -- 6. Of those, two are boxsters. The rest are 911s. I also have two 8 cylinder Porsches (Cayenne and 928).

The boxsters are the most fun to drive. The 8 cylinders are far easier to work on. Having a gargantuan hood open up over the motor makes working on a boxster through the access cover feel like you're building a boat in a bottle.

The first sports car I bought (1990 Miata, used for $2000) was a big thrill. I wish I still had it sometimes, but I tell myself I can only drive one at a time. I like my Boxster more than the Miata, but for me the thrill diminishes after a while and I don't think I would be happier in the long run having more than one.

I do enjoy upgrading the car I have, which is probably a mental reward similar to buying another car.

That said, when my wife's Highlander dies, I will strongly suggest that she look at used Macans before we buy another Toyota. Porsches are just more thrilling.

Everyone is different and what works for me might not work for everyone. Most of the people I know don't own Porsches. Many of them seem perfectly happy to me. Maybe not as happy as Boxster owners, but it's their loss.
