Another cluster question

My 986 is a 2000 (actually 99 stamped on the engine cover, I swear this was the period where they just made **************** up from a wiring connection standpoint)

The instrument cluster is one where there are slide tabs on the back, one on each side, that have to be pried laterally (away from center) in order to open the cluster. These slides appear to be electrical connectors

After changing out some bulbs and putting on white gauge face overlays, the instruments don't light up when the headlights are turned on, and the turn flashers don't illuminate.

I'm not sure if the gauges work (I didn't want to wake up the fam) but the lcds and the indicator lights are all working.

Fuses are fine.

I'm wondering if it's these silly side connectors? Does anyone know specifically what connections those are? Is there any way to test if they are fully seated?
