Related question - for those of us that want to completely remove the SAI components, do we remove everything in the diagram below, or do any of the items need to be retained? If the latter, which numbers?

If you need to provide vacuum to the Resonance Flap - you need the Vacuum Accumulator, a vacuum source and check valve.I had linked this before & in this thread:
air intake/vacuum line routing - Pelican Parts Technical BBS So the specific question is - what codes/performance issues are there if the resonance valve is deprived of any vacuum? The Resonance Flap(K) is electrically controlled by a solenoid (J) and receives vacuum directly from the Accumulator via a "Y" or 4-way connector.This is clearly shown in the linked diagrams from Wayne and identified by part name in his next Post in the link. |

So it sounds like my '98 just needs the block off plates for #5 and a vacuum cap where #7 attaches, then I can remove all items in the diagram. |

Mr. Stone gave us the part names and numbers that the Track Rats use and the source. You could probably make your own easily. But we really need to field test this for a while (Particleweave will decide this not me). I mention this because a previous attempt at this SAI circuit mod failed because(?) :" the CEL comes on after the engine has been driven for some time due to a self-test of the SAI valve that is done with the engine warm. To perform this test the SAI pump is activated but the SAI valve controlling the air flow is not opened." In this old case, removing some electrical parts of the SAI system(Pump) caused the mod to fail. There were variations by model year (already mentioned in earlier posts) that contributed to the confusion. So we need to be cautiously optimistic. |
there may also be a tipronic vacuum line. note that when you delete the sai components you also delete the bracket that the vac tank mounts to, so you'll have to find something sturdy in there and introduce a couple of zip ties to hold it in place. also not the easiest area to work in without removing at least the plenum and resonance tube.

I already have the block off plates & gaskets, so good to go on that front.
I'm planning to rip everything out to test. Inspection isn't up until OCT so I can be a test mule for complete removal. |
Sweet idea, and thread! Read it all but nowhere I found the International shipping details. Few friends here in SH who could do with this I'm sure... perfect way to get your widget on eBay the following week also, mind you :D

I had SAI codes and a "Ready Status" Fail flag so my car failed the Test-Only California Smog Test. I completed a tedious project to trace,check, repair and upgrade the entire system. Not a simple weekend task !
I fixed it all and passed Smog 5 days ago.During this honeymoon period I disconnected & plugged the SAI pump hose to simulate a failure, connected the Particlewave circuit to test it. It worked. I then disconnected it and reconnected the SAI hose.No codes. This morning the codes came back ! Knowing this may be an endless cycle of failures/fixes is not attractive. This is why the circuit from Particlewave is useful to me. I can just fit his circuit now, delete the CEL with a simple code reader and repair the SAI system(again) when I have time . For those curious about the SAI vacuum upgrades I made - most of the vacuum connectors are now brass and the hose is good quality 3mm silicone.Should outlast the car -& me ! I also rebuilt the SAI pump and have a rebuilt spare. TheSAI pump still operates perfectly - I can hear it.The vacuum system which is easy to test(but tedious to fix) still holds perfect vacuum. So it is probably the electric change-over valve, or....... For the Durametric users - if you are looking for the pre-cat O2 Sensor voltage to prove that the air injection system is working/failing - remember two things 1. The ports in the cylinder head can plug with carbon(mine is a newly rebuilt M96 so no problem. 2. To see the graph of the flat wave form change to sine wave(the proof) on the pre-cat sensor - start the car at the coldest possible temperature and be really fast with your keyboard skills.At Los Angeles summer temps you have no more than 5-10 seconds before the flat wave changes to sine wave in my experience. If you are slow you may make an incorrect diagnosis. |
