this advice makes sense if you have already have the space, tools and the cost of your free time is below the shop's hourly rate. All those things cost $$$$ to posses. And after having spent over $30k in running costs over the course of 13 years (not terrible I suppose) I find that labor is very rarely more than 1/3 of the repair bill. The costs of mass produced car parts do not scale down over time, only the resale value of mass produced cars.
