Bank 1 / Bank 2

Are all vehicles the same? Bank 2 passenger side?

When viewed from the rear, bank 1 is on the right side (passenger US).

Are you referring specifically to the Boxster? I've had cars where that wasn't the case.

This is why it is less confusing to use 4-5-6 or 1-2-3. The cylinder numbers are marked on the engine but are feint. For my rebuild I used a paint-pen to mark them on the crankcase and intake to void silly confusion when dealing with error codes.
Important with the M96 because of the 996/986 engine reorientation.

Yes, for all 986's. I believe the 996 is the other way around.

Tim's original question asked about "all vehicles", so I didn't think he was just asking about our 986s. I have read and heard that bank one is the side that cylinder #1 is on and that cylinder #1 is the most forward (Forward being relative to the engine with output being at the back). I have read that there are exceptions, but I don't know of any. Was the term 'bank' even used before O2 sensors (fuel injection) was in use?

Good points.
It can be difficult to see which is the most forward cylinder and therefore easy to mistake 1 &4.Not a good mistake sometimes!.
Hence my paint pen suggestion. Helpfully the cylinder numbers are cast onto the cranckcase but are difficult to locate/see. Bright green paint pen solves that !

Sorry guys. I have a O2 sensor code on my F150. Bank 2 sensor 2.

There are sensors in the cats for each side but none downstream from that.

Here are the alternative facts....
