NO matter how cold it is, when I press the auto button on the climate control the AC goes on. Shouldn't it stay off if it is cold out.

It's made to do that. The a/c compressor comes on to regulate the humidity but yet still heat the car to the temp you see it at. It's that way for all climate controlled cars. Happens in my Audi and Benz too.

That's good to know. Although it doesn't happen in my Maxima. If the car needs cooling, compressor is on. If it needs heating it's not.

It happens even in my Hyundai so maybe your Maxima has an issue or just not designed for it....

It happened in my Infiniti FX too, but you could turn the A/C off manually and keep the climate control on AUTO which you can't seem to do with the German cars. If you did that though, it would get real stuffy in the cabin. Better to let it just stay on.

As far as my Boxster, there is a noticeable change in how the car drives with it on. Seems to have less power. With my 300hp maxima there really doesn't seem to be a noticeable difference.

Yep, the A/C compressor does sap some power from the engine. Some people install an underdrive accessory pulley to get some of that power back, or just turn off the auto function and just set the temp higher (without switching the Auto button on). The heat will still come on (at least it does in my Boxster).
