Is your current 986 a TIP or manual transmission car? Why the move to the 911? Prestige, power (can you even use it on your roads), hardtop, 4WD, auto trans?

A 911 and a 986 of the same year will have the same RMS and IMS problem probability assuming original engines. The 1999 is around 4-8 times less likely than the 2004 or 2001. Maintenance history of each of the prospective cars would be important. Especially suspension updates.
