Turn U shaped item over. it wears over time and this will give it an as new surface to latch to.

1. Remove top screw
2. Loosen bottom screw
3. Leaving bottom screw in, allow u shaped item to swing away from top bolt hole.
4. Re install top screw to hold the backing plate (important!)
5. Remove bottom screw.
6. Note old and new direction of u shaped latch and set aside.
7. Re install bottom screw with u shaped item turned over.
8. Remove top screw that was previously holding backing plate now that you have said backing plate secured with the bottom screw (through latch)
9. orient the latch so that it lines up as before, but upside down. You should be able to see the lines from the dirty areas.
10. Reinstall top screw.
11. tighten both screws as the were originally, keeping careful eye on the alignment of latch so that the door will close and align properly.

if you see no wear or if this doesn't help, then you may need to adjust the window or grease the weatherstripping.
