De Snorkel - any downside?

So I have read the many de snorkeling threads on here, and I am still undecided on whether to do mine. Many forum members advocate a 3-5hp gain, and many more advocate a loss of torque on the low end. I don't really care about this, I would just be doing it for the sound. What I have not been able to figure out, is if there is any real downside to the desnorkel as far as the health of the car goes. I've heard about the cigarette butt horror stories, but if I put a mesh screen over it after removing the snorkel, are there any other possible downsides?

If you only car about the sound, do it!
It's an easy mod.

No noticeable gains or loses in hp or torque. Small noticeable change in sound but only at the higher revs (4000+). I've done it but not worth the risk if there is a possibility you are going to break your intake vent.

Thanks for the input, breaking the intake vent would only happen as a result of yanking the snorkel out right? There are no long term maladies or additional wear and tear that result from removing the snorkel?

I have heard unconfirmed reports of water ingestion causing problems when the snorkel is removed

I removed, didn't notice any difference and put back on. If there was any change in sound, my ears did not pick up.
I would leave be imo.

There is a lot of debate about desnorkeling and water issues. Some people believe the snorkel helps keep water from getting into the engine through the intake, others think that is nonsense. You can decide for yourself, but I would probably avoid it if you park outside.

Thanks you just made my decision easy, I have to park outside all the time because I still live at home and my dad gets all the garage space haha guess I'm keeping the snorkel!

I de-snorked several years ago and have never had a problem, and I have both driven and parked the car in some very heavy rains. I love the difference in sound.

Why not try it? You can always put it back later if you want to.

I've heard that it can be fairly hard to remove just because you really have to yank and twist to get it out. This leads me to believe it might be a pain in the ass to get it back in. I am open to trying it if it's easy enough to reinstall after removing it.

I desnorkled over five years ago. I haven't experienced any adverse effects by doing so. But, there is Not much noticeable difference in sound...if any.

Water in the engine? unless you pour a whole bottle in it, it won't hurt much!

If the air filter gets soaked, it might become a restriction. Or if liquid water gets on the MAF it might throw the readings off.

Though, I don't think the snorkel will prevent any water to enter the engine.

As said, you can always put it back

Go for it. It's a bit of a pain to get off. Feels like your going to break it and then it snaps out. I think it's a small, but noticeable difference in intake sound......a good sound to begin with made a little meaner. I'm satisfied with it.
