Vids from COTA

Spent 3 days last weekend at COTA. It was different from last yr in several ways:

Run groups were now 60 cars instead of 50. The extra 10 cars made it seem crowded. Plus my 987.1 and my brother's 951 were the lowest HP Porsches in our group. Lots of 981s, GT3s, and TTs. We were a knife at a gun fight. But I felt like I ran good lines and made the most of my puny 303HP. Hard to compete when my top speed on the back straight was 130 and the top cars were going 165.

Over half the people had never driven COTA before. We had issues with guys not giving point bys and guys not waiting for point bys. The officials got so upset that they banned passing in 3-9 on Fri, but all that really did was create more freight trains (they restored open passing on Sat). They also got upset with a 981S and his aggressive driving - to the point where they sent him out with an instructor. He settled down after that.

This was the first event where I did rev-matching. Went fairly well but I messed up a few times. Feels more natural now.

I miss my Super Sports. Conti DWs are good tires but not great track tires. It seemed like I was always on the edge. I felt I was running faster than last yr but my times didn't show it. The Contis are good in the rain. I was just outside Lincoln on my way home and raced a tornado around the edge of town. I was driving 85mph in a heavy rain and the tires were solid. But my next set of tires will be SS's.

Enjoy

Thanks for sharing your videos. I see your brother was doing well the first couple laps then he waved you by. Did he have issues? As I expected during the first couple laps I saw he did well on the straights but you reeled him in during the corners until he waved you by. Would you know what modifications he has on the 951?

Your exhaust doesn't sound stock? Sounds more like straight pipes?

I saw an e36 M3 pass you by with other faster cars. That must have been heavily modified.

His 944T came with ROW and a 300HP chip. He generally is faster than me on the straights but his car leans quite a bit in the corners. He can hold me off for a few laps but waves me by when it becomes too much work. I've talked to him about his excessive lean, thinking he might have some bushings that are worn out (it has 145K mi on it), but he doesn't seem to want to check it out. You are correct, I'm faster in the corners than he is - I make a lot of time between 8 - 10 (he's between gears there). I run about 3-4 sec faster a lap than he does. He was really frustrated this yr with being passed so much and was talking that this might be his last yr at COTA. I understand his frustration but still LOVE the course. When you think about it, his 951 is the 1980s version of my car as far as power and balance.

You have a good ear. I have PSE and have it permanently on (although it would be on when I'm tracking). It blows at a 94dB rate. I know that b/c Laguna Seca had a 92dB limit when I ran there after 2014 Porsche Parade and the noise police black flagged me. Since my PSE was permanently on, I had to short shift out of T5 past their listening hut.

I'll take your word on the BMW. Don't know much about them.

I was looking to meet you all weekend but never seemed to catch you at the right time. It seemed like the only time I saw you, you were getting prepped or I was bringing parts to people.

That is unfortunate. I would have enjoyed meeting you. It's fun to meet forum members. I met Jager and Cas51 at 2014 Parade. You shouldn't have had trouble finding my car in garage 17.

It seemed there was more to do this yr than last between sessions. The big gap is Sun when they run the two club races. Our last morning session was 11am and the next / final session was 3:30ish. But I watched the race from various locations in the stands. There are lots of neat places to view the activity at COTA.

My CD with COTA pics arrived last wk. Had to load them into tinypic since the upload size here is so small (hint, hint).

Enjoy
