Tall Driver Boxster Fit?
I'm considering an out of state 2001 Boxster S and my concern is leg room. I'm 6'2", at the upper limit so I wanted to test sit a Boxster before proceeding.
An '06 seemed comfortable, enough leg room but I wonder if this was increased since '01. Aside from reliable info, anyone in Seattle willing to let me try on your '01 Boxster for size? This issue, assuming good results from a PPI, is the only thing standing in the way of this purchase. Will I fit, or must I quit? |
I'm right around 6 foot in a 1997 boxster base. I sit very comfortable and still have some room to scoot the seat back. However i like to sit a little closer so that I can get the clutch all the way down with no difficulty.
|
I'm 6' 2" no problem with head room. There is still 2-3 inches of clearance. Leg room for me is right where I like it but with the seat all the way back. I like close so it fits me.
My son at 6' 3" hates the passenger seat because it can't lean back. But then again who would like being a passenger in a Porsche |
I have a 97 and opted for a Tip over the manual. I wish the steering wheel tilted, instead of telescoping. I'm 6' and I have to hold my leg at an awkward angle to the side to manually shift. I can do it, but it is not optimal.
|
My dad's 6'2" (188 cm) and my parents sold their 2003 Boxster S in favor of a 997 C4 since he was too tall to sit comfortably. I'm 5'10½" (179 cm) myself and I fit very well into mine.
|
I'm 6'2" with a 2000 S manual and the fit is fine with the stock seats, in fact I had one more click left if I needed to go all the way back.
|
am 6'3" no problems at all
|
6'2" - if I were any taller it would be a bit tight, I have trouble shifting when wearing sneakers, keep driving shoes in the car...also took out floor mats for a little more space.

6 foot 2 with size 14 shoe. Gotta take of my shoes to drive but plenty of head room and leg room is fine if you approach the clutch at an angle.
Honestly these cars have a lot of interior room, you'd be amazed what you have space to do. |
Also 6'2" here with room to spare in the car.
|
2000 S stock seats, I am 6'1 long in the legs and comfortable but feel a little tight. I have seat all the way down and back and a little angle on the back. Frankly I would kike about an inch more room to have some seat tilt. However I am comfortable to the point i really love driving the car.
You can remove the section out of the center console where the cd holder is, to get a little more room. My advice is sit in one and play around with the seat adjustment before you buy. I love the car but comfort is a personel opinion thing and everyone is different. |
When I was looking at boxsters I found that the 987 (2005+) had more leg room than a 986. It would be a good idea to sit in one before buying.
|
I am 6'4" and dont feel that the space is too bad.
The trick is to NOT have the seat all the way back on the horizontal level, in order to be able lean the back in a proper way. |
I'm 6'6" and managed to daily my 2000 Boxster S. It isn't a particularly roomy car, but as far as a sporty driving position it is brilliant. The first time I sat in it I found it a bit tight, but after driving it and getting things adjusted properly I couldn't pass it up. My right knee does have to rest against the center console, though. Headroom is plentiful. With the clutch fully depressed my leg has only a slight bend in it. Also I wear fairly flat shoes.

6' 4", 200 lbs here, no problem
|
Wow, its amazing how you guys fit. My best friend test drove my car and actually purchased on my behalf. He's 6'3. It was a little tight, but he says once he got in, it was fine.
|
Lol, Ive got the torso of a 6'4" guy.
on stubby legs, in stock form the roof is clost to your head but works well. with a race seat, when you can drop it way down, the feel is incredible. (or a GT3, like I had for a few glorious weeks, now I know why 4k$ a set) Interesting to note the change back to a stock seat... |
At 6'2", I'm fine with the room in the car once seated. It's the getting in and out that's difficult...:)
|
I'm 6'2" 225 lbs, (55 years old). I feel like I'm the largest person that could drive my 2003 S Manual comfortably. If I was any bigger, I think it would feel too small.
|
I have an 03 S Im 6ft 185 and wish I could take it back just more notch! It is ok but 1 notch would be perfect!
|
Hmmmm no one's answered your question... "may I sit in your car located near me (Seattle)"?
All the tubs are the same. Be sure to adjust the steering wheel (telescoping only). You might just want to try Craigslist and sit in a car for sale. |
My wife and I both have 'tall car problems'.
The specific issue is not just "Tall" but long torso &/or long legs ? The long torso may give you problems seeing traffic signals at a stop light through the top of the windshield. On some cars(MB SLK) the over-sized rear view mirror is so close to your forehead, it creates a blind-spot.With a Miata it is hopeless if you are even 6'0". Unlike older cars , it is neither easy nor advisable to modify the seat or rails to give more room. The new Mustang has lots of room. |
6 ft 4. I have better headroom in my 2003 Boxster than in my C4 Corvette which surprised me. I have to work my way in a bit around the steering wheel (telescope only) but my size 14 feet are fine with the pedals.
|
I guess people have different thresholds. I'm 6'2", 210 on a good day and have owned two Miatas with no complaints (did a 1100 mile straight through road trip with no cruise control in the second one).
The boxster is voluminous by comparison. Getting in and out is, as pointed out by others, the issue when you're geriatrically challenged. EDIT: Oh, and if you're willing to come to Tacoma you can sit in mine |
6' 4" and 225 lbs and I fit fine. I did install a GT3 center console delete kit to give my right leg some room and make heel and toeing easier.
|
My youngest son is 6' - 4" and 195 lbs. He can get in, but if he slumps low enough to get some headroom, his legs are kind of jammed up. Note that he had a worse time in the '95 Miata replaced by this Boxster since the Miata steering column did not telescope. He borrows my car anyway.
|
I'm 6' 1", and feel that if I were taller, I couldn't tolerate the driving position, but we are all built differently.
Seattle is home to me, you are welcome to come sit in my '02. As far as I know, it's the same as a '01. |
These days I'm only 6'3" after a good stretching session any more, but still over 6'2" and currently 200#. I fit in my 03 S without full power seats ok, wish the seat could be lowered another inch. Haven't done the GT3 console delete, although I've thought about it. I've had an opportunity to drive a 997 Carrera S, a 981 Boxster S and a 991 Turbo, which all had more head and leg room.
|
Posts like this always end up with pages and pages of "I'm 6'-X" and..."
They all mean almost nothing, except "Hey, everybody, I'm tall, too!...". It all depends on weight, proportions, etc. (long/short legs/arms, brain) :) Lots of wasted bandwith here. Only way to tell is for the OP sit/drive one. C-list, or ???? |
Maybe people should mention waist size too... because unless you're 6'7", that will cause you not to fit in a Boxster than height.
|
Look up "console delete" which is a Porsche kit that allows the center console to be removed so the legs can splay more towards the center. Provides carpet pieces that look stock.

I fit fine but I will give a +986 for not being able to see red lights often with the convertible top up.

I'm 6' with a 33 inch inseam and I wish I had another notch or two but it beats my NA Miata!

6'3" - 300 pounds - ding!
I have no issues and plenty of head room with the top up in those rare circumstances when I drive with the top up. Although I did get nailed in the forehead by a june bug on the expressway when I first started driving it. It's OK. You can laugh. I did find when driving 1000 miles to Dallas, that I couldn't move too much and it became incredibly uncomfortable. That might be because it has sports suspension versus my big sedans that I normally drive. Or maybe... just maybe, it had to do with the fact that I'm 300 pounds. But I doubt that very much. |

I'm 6'3" and looking to improve legroom a little bit.
Will probably have to do the GT3 console delete plus maybe look into different seat options. |
There are mods that can be done for longer legged drivers.
Console delete kit. Allows right leg to splay more to the side. Brackets to lower the seat mounting. More than height, the inseam of your pants as a proxy for leg length may be relevant to the discussion. (I have 2 kids aprox the same height and their inseams are 4 inches different.) |
