Cleaning Glass
Whats does everyone use to clean their glass? I bought some auto glass cleaner, now I can't remenmber who makes it, but it's not very good. I have to spray and wipe over and over. Is there some technique the works best? Should I use paper towels, cotton towels or microfiber towels? I've tried them all and microfiber seems to work best, but I'd hate to keep using the expensive microfiber to if I don't need to. I'd prefer to save the microfiber for the paint. Also, what is best to clean the clear plastic on the wind stop?
I know Perfectlap will give me some good tips :) Thanks  |
I use the Stoner brand glass cleaner and wadded up newspaper :)
News paper is great as it won't leave lint and won't scratch either. |
overt the counter Meguairs NXT is good. But don't use it in sunlight or heat it will haze. Mail order I would buy FK 425 (buy it by the gallon BELIEVE ME you will be addicted) on glass and paint. FK use dust repellents in many of their products. I use 425 on my TV and PC monitor. FK 146 is a great cleaner as well (glass and paint).
Stoner is also a decent over the product glass product from Pepboys, autozone etc. |
Stoner Invisible glass and newspaper
I have found nothing that works any better than this combination.

I make my own glass cleaner:
1 part de-natured alcohol and 2 parts distilled water in a spray bottle. I spray the cleaner on a clean, white, 100% cotton terry cloth towel, clean the window, and then polish the glass with a dry towel. Works great. For the windstop, I have been using the Zaino detailing spray (Z6) with a cotton towel. |
for the plastic windstop, nothing i've found works any better than 3M Plastic Polish. The stuff not only makes the plastic more optically "perfect", but removed some scratches I had in the thing. You can get it at Pepboys, or look for it at properautocare.com.

Hi,
One neat trick when cleaning the Glass is to clean the Exterior Glass with Vertical strokes and the Interior Glass with Horizontal strokes. This way, you can instantly identify which side of the Glass any streaks are on. FYI... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
p.s.
keep alcohol away from your tinted windows. This includes defogging products like RainX. |
Thanks for all the tips!!! Especially to use newspaper. Ya know... I think use I know about using newspapers to wipe with, but at some point just forgot about it. :D
Thanks again  |
So ... the newspaper thing. Is any particular newspaper best? The Wall Street Journal, maybe?
Kidding aside, this sounds like a neat tip, and not one that I at least would have thought of in a million years. |
I own a detail shop and I use Stoner Invisible glass and a microfiber.

Nice detailing tips here....Is Stoner Invisible Glass available at retail stores? Or only online? Sounds like a lot of people here using it....
Never mind :o ...I see where Perfectlap says Pep Boys carries it.... |
Hi,
Once again, a seemingly universal Solvent/Cleaner - PrepSol, especially for the exterior Windshield. It will cut through Sap, Bugs, Grime and Diesel Oil Film. I also use Jaguar Glass Polish once annually. Another good annual Cleaner is to use Bon Ami Cleanser, this is an old Show Car trick. Bon Ami uses Calcium Carbonate rather than Pumice like Ajax or Comet uses, and so will not scratch the glass, but will clean all the builtup grime and such without hurting the Glass or surrounding Paint or Rubber, just be sure to use plenty of rinse water. And unlike Ajax or Comet, it contains no Chlorine... Happy Motoring!... Jim'99 |
